Semaglutide

What is semaglutide?

Semaglutide is part of a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists that treat type 2 diabetes and is an anti-obesity drug for patients with weight problems. It’s the active ingredient in Wegovy™, Ozempic®, and Rybelsus®.

How does semaglutide work?

Semaglutide mimics the hormone GLP-1, which targets the part of your brain in charge of how hungry you are and how much food you eat. It slows down the rate at which food moves from your stomach through your digestive system, known as gastric emptying. It then sends signals telling your brain there’s food in your stomach, which reduces your appetite.

You think less about eating and don’t experience intense food cravings, which, as we all know, are hard to ignore. With semaglutide, smaller quantities of food keep you satisfied longer, so you’re not hungry as often as usual. You consume fewer calories than you are burning, putting you into a calorie deficit. The result? Weight loss that works and is easy.

As we also are well aware, losing weight is mentally challenging. What’s unique about GLP-1 medications is they work with your hypothalamus, the part of your brain responsible for hunger. For many of us, overeating is an internal battle that we often lose. The opponent? That juicy steak staring at you on your plate or the delicious doughnut calling your name from across the kitchen. The buttery meat and sugary treat overrides the signals from hormones in your body that tell the brain you’re full. One more bite becomes two, and eventually, your plate is empty, leaving you disappointed in yourself and overstuffed.

The struggle is real, but it no longer has to be. Your new reality is better eating habits to sustain weight loss beyond semaglutide.

How do I use semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a pain-free and straightforward weekly shot that is self-administered from the comfort of your home. Your Slimr team will show you how to inject yourself subcutaneously (under the skin) to ensure you’re dispensing the medication correctly. Slimr provides easy, affordable, and accessible access to a clinically proven weight loss solution, along with guidance and support.

What’s better than that?

Semaglutide is a wonderful and effective way to boost your weight loss; however, it’s important to note that it’s only one part of your weight loss puzzle. A healthy diet with plenty of protein and lifestyle changes will increase your chances of losing weight and keeping it off when you stop using semaglutide. Slimr educates and motivates you, creating a stress-free and enjoyable path to losing weight with sustainable results.

What dose of semaglutide will I be prescribed?

Upon approval, you will begin using semaglutide with a starter dose for the first four weeks. This helps introduce a new substance into your body with minimum side effects. It’s important to remember that semaglutide is not a one-size-fits-all medication. Slimr personalizes your dosage based on your current health status, health history, and other factors. As your dose increases, you may notice any side effects you’re experiencing will decrease. Once you reach your weight loss goal, your provider will prescribe a low-dose maintenance plan.

What are the side effects of semaglutide?

Not everyone experiences side effects while on semaglutide. Some may experience stomach discomfort, especially if they eat more than they should. When heartburn, bloating, and burping sets in, eating fewer portions will alleviate those symptoms. Some may experience nausea and vomiting, which is a result of how semaglutide impacts the digestive system. Since your food is moving slower through your gut, constipation may occur. As your body adjusts, your side effects may significantly lower or disappear. If you feel semaglutide is not for you, tirzepatide, another weight loss medication Slimr offers, might be a better option.

Who is a candidate for semaglutide?

Only some people are candidates for semaglutide. According to the Obesity Medicine Association (OBM), “Adults with obesity (BMI 30 or more) or overweight (BMI 27-29) with at least one weight-related condition (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol), are eligible to receive it if there are no contraindications.”
